After consideration Laurence accepts and they travel to Sydney where he puts together a crew for Temeraire. The pickings are pretty slim for crew, but much to his surprise and pleasure, Ferris shows up.
Laurence still can't reinstate him as an officer but he brings him along in an unofficial capacity. This results in somewhat strained circumstances with Forthing who Laurence does choose has his First Lieutenant. After an incident with Emily Roland and some members of the Rum Corps, Laurence decides that she needs a woman to help guide her, he hires a young widow that he recently had meet, Alice Pemberton through the help of Elizabeth Macarthur.
In return for her help, Laurence has to take along a young orphan boy, Gerry as a runner. Laurence and Temeraire have been been called to China, but off the coast of Japan their ship is caught in a storm. During the journey, Temeraire discovers just what length the Russian peasants are going to, to trap and kill any Dragon that comes in their area. Tharkay arrives just in time to save Temeraire from serious injury or death while he sleeps.
Tharkay has word that the egg is on its way to France, so he and Temeraire return to Laurence. Once again, they set out and while searching through the Alps for the Dragons transporting the egg, they encounter Iskierka and Granby.
She had also heard about the egg being stolen and that Lein plans on destroying it. They continue to search together now, in tell they spy a French dragon winging through the mountains and follow it. But it turns out to be an elaborate trap that succeeds and they are all imprisoned. The two dragons are separated from the humans and taken directly to Palace of Fontainebleau where the grounds have been completely altered to make a comfortable resident for many dragons.
Eventually their Captains and Tharkay arrive and Fontainebleau, but they are only allowed to see Laurence and Granby briefly. Tharkay has a bit more freedom to visit them and suggest that they may have to take care of everything on their own. Temeraire and Iskierka eventually decide that they will have to steal the egg and leave behind their Captains until they can get the egg to safety. While they are making their plans, they discover why there are so many dragons visiting the Palace, dragons from all over the world.
Of course, the Dragons all see this is a great idea, without thinking through how it would actually work and the consequences. Temeraire also discovers that the French have approximately new eggs waiting to hatch. When there is an unexpected disturbance on the ground that has a great many guards distracted, Temeraire and Iskierka act, first Iskierka sets their pavilion on fire while Temeraire retrieves their egg and they take flight. Before they get far, Temeraire who is carrying the egg, realizes that it is trying to hatch, so they set down near a lake and the dragonette hatches.
Eventually known as Ning , she proves to be a very intelligent handful from the beginning. Ning creates a distraction by setting Fontainebleau on fire so that Temeraire and Iskierka can rescue the men. Their plan is to allot shares of any spoils of war that they get based on their how hard they fought and obedient to orders.

When she learns that Napoleon's son is just a baby, she agrees to help her parents rescue their humans and go to England. She sets the Palace on fire, with a new kind of fire, a cross between the Divine Wind and Iskierka's fire.
